Last fall, I did an interview with an up-and-coming suspense author named Mike Dellosso. At the time, he was waiting with bated (yes, that’s how it’s spelled) – bated breath to hear whether his novel, The Hunted, was going to be released by Realms. Shortly after that, I was able to congratulate him on a contract successfully negotiated.
In that correspondence, Mike really humanized the later parts of the writing process for me – I mean, I know the part about putting words together nicely. But then there’s the selling part and the public self-presentation part and all that stuff. It finally clicked into my reality that all writers, editors and company managers are just people. I like people. I prefer people who say hi to me first, which Mike did on ShoutLife. But I especially like people who write things that drag me right into the story, which is what Mike’s first chapter did. That was why I interviewed him. He wrote something cool.
When I started hanging around here again this spring, Gina Conroy submitted a post about the Writer…Interrupted community. And she mentioned that Mike Dellosso had been diagnosed with cancer.

I spent one decade submerged into a subculture which I didn’t even realize existed at the time. As I found myself escaping the subculture, I realized I was living life only in the “Christian subculture“. Now, after spending a decade on the outside of the “Christian subculture“, I don’t consider myself bitter about the “Christian subculture” but alarmed about it!

I left my small-town home because I was sick of the stupid social rules that develop in a compressed community environment. Oh, la, and then I became a Christian. My first church did not like me. I said exactly what I thought, and if something didn’t line up with the Bible, I wanted to know why they’d do that, when they’re supposed to be Christians and know this stuff.

The consumerism of our culture and my Christian faith often leave me pondering … “When is enough … enough?” We’re bombarded with advertisements and social pressures to have more, to have something bigger and better. Often times, when we do not have the latest style, the newest model, the larger home and the newer car, it leaves us feeling like we do not have enough.
I believe it’s great to enjoy the good things in life, which have different definitions for nearly each one of us.

Well, we’re halfway there already, what with political correctness. But here in Canada, we have something called “Human Rights Commissions.” These are the equivalent of Child and Family Services for grownups. If you tick off someone else, they can complain their human rights were violated and drag you before a tribunal which may financially or otherwise penalize you. Certainly, you’ll find there’s a social penalty to face, just for becoming a defendant.
A few years ago, a rash of gay-versus-Christian cases went through the HRCs.
