By Trina Daniels

While visiting a church recently, a severely obese pastor delivered a sermon. I had a tough time listening to the sermon about the failure of “Christians to witness.” I fell into the sin of judging him based on his obesity. As I glanced around the congregation, the majority of the people were overweight. I’m only human and couldn’t help but wonder why there wasn’t a message being taught about taking care of the bodies God has given us.

Overeating seems to be one of the sins which most pastors, Christians, reverends, and priests overlook. If “gluttony is a sin,” why is “Christian America” one of the “fattest nations“? It’s a serious issue which is seldom discussed despite a growing number of “christian” based weight loss programs. (more…)

The Monday Hum: Classical Gas (Greenhouse, That Is)

April 21, 2008 By: Cathi-Lyn Dyck, Managing Editor Category: Sustainability, Values, Life, Health, Technology, Political No Comments →

Radio Netherlands reports that classical music concerts can be responsible for 50 tons of carbon emissions. Since the Dutch don’t have enough land for the number of trees it would take to cancel that out, one organizer is donating concert revenue to a project for using cow manure to make electricity.

Here in Canada, the CBC reports that cattle emit 200 to 300 litres of methane per day, and there’s about 1.2 billion of them. Never mind the sheep, goats, camels and water buffalo. Meanwhile, back in 2006, according to a Buddhist blogger, the New York Times was already blaming cows for 18% of climate change-causing methane emissions.

So. We use the cows to fuel the concerts to reduce climate change, but we’ve got to get rid of the cows to reduce climate change. Sounds like the global initiative is a well-orchestrated, streamlined logic machine to me.

And that’s my opinionated opinion for this week. Ta ta!

…No, I don’t mean what you might find up the nose of a Christian with a cold.

TheBereanCall.org’s radio program, Search the Scriptures Daily, quotes an Orlando Sentinel article from Feb 22/08 on evangelicals and global warming:

“Global warming is an offense against God….America needs our biblical outrage….we as a nation will face a judgment from God if we don’t do this.”

– Rev. Richard Cizik, National Association of Evangelicals’ vice-president of governmental affairs

Cizik has been covered by enviro mag Grist, the Washington Post, PBS’s Religion & Ethics Newsweekly and Christianity Today for his opinions on global warming. Other major evangelical leaders, including James Dobson, have called for him to be silenced or fired for his stance on the climate change controversy. According to a quote referenced by Christianity Today, Jerry Falwell brands it “be[ing] duped by these ‘earthism’ worshippers.” (more…)

The Monday Hum: Got a Black Thumb?

September 19, 2007 By: Marty Category: Gardening, Food, Sustainability, Health, Religion No Comments →

Sustainable living encompasses a lot of complex issues. But is it so complex to actually improve your own individual way of living?

No. If it were, I’d be too lazy to do it.

I would venture to say that most of North America has some kind of sustainable infrastructure in place these days. Urbanites needn’t fear their lack of available dirt—in fact, you may want to have your soil tested for chemical residues and heavy metals before you try growing anything in it. You just don’t know.
