Grin and Bear It…Not Me
“Grin and Bear It” has been a popular idiom for generations. It means to not only endure but happily accept a bad situation because there is nothing you can do to improve it.
I would call that hopelessness.
A researcher in Germany has discovered that if you grin and bear something it can actually cause health problems and rightly so. If a person is forfeiting their humanity to appease someone else, then there is no way a person can actually enjoy that. It has to break down the body and mind at some point.
As a believer I never have resigned myself to the “Grin and Bear It” mentality. And I never have to either because as a follower of Christ I have tools, resources and even an advocate who is for me making petitions for my wellbeing. This does not mean that I don’t suffer defeats and even abuses at the hands of others but instead that when those things come my way, I can unload them not on other people but into the hands of a loving and caring God.
It’s a simple faith, really, that we have tried to make incredibly complex. confusing even. But at the root being a Christian means that you are never powerless in any situation and that there is always a strong advocate in your corner.
