Canada, Texas and Europe: Let’s Ramble
Molly Noble Bull with Cathi-Lyn Dyck
I went looking for stuff to drag home last week, and got into a conversation with author Molly Noble Bull. She just won a pretty cool award for her historical fiction book, Sanctuary. However, I’m from Canada, which prompted some questions in return.
Cat: Hi, Molly, and welcome to Humble O. Tell me the weirdest opinion you’ve heard out there lately. :~)
Molly. Hi right back, Cathi-lyn.
Since some think my opinions are weird to begin with, I will need to think about this.
(Pause)
I was born in Kingsville, Texas which happens to be the home of the famous King Ranch. Though they never worked on the King ranch, my father and my maternal grandfather were ranch managers. In other words, they were real-for-sure Texas cowboys. I spent part of my growing up years on a sixty thousand acre cattle ranch. Yet I was once told to set a western I was writing in Colorado since everybody set their westerns in Texas.
Cat: Next time, refuse and insist on Alberta, Canada.
Molly: I’ve been to Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. Is that near Alberta? We have friends who lived in upstate New York, and they drove us to Niagara once. Beautiful. And when my husband was in the army, the airplane touched down in Canada on my way to Germany where Charlie was stationed.
Cat: (grin) Nope, Niagara Falls is nowhere near Alberta. Canada has tons more land mass than the States, which I think must contribute to the confusion of foreign visitors as they try to figure out where on earth they/we are.
Molly: I would love to really visit Canada someday. Do you live in Alberta maybe or near there?
Cat: I’ll tell you tomorrow. Gang, join us for Part 2 of the conversation then.
